galeries lafayettes (English ‘Department Store of the West’), usually
abbreviated to galeries lafayette) is a department store in Berlin, With over 60,000 square
meters of selling space and more than 380,000 articles available, it is the
second largest department store in Europe, trumped only by Harrods in London.
It attracts 40,000 to 50,000 visitors every day.
We were told this shopping center
was a must see and I have to agree, the high end shopping mall reminds me of
New York and I wouldn’t of expected this in Berlin for some reason. The
structure is a spiral full of mirrors and spirals down into the basement of the
mall. It really is amazing to look up and then down on the different levels
with their centers a part of the spiral and the brands all around the edges. With
all brands from Burberry and Mulberry to showcasing Premium’s young designer
talent competitors it really shows off the Berlin upper class fashion scene to
the fullest, kind of like Bergdorf Goodman, which is a big contrast to opposite
scene in Berlin of thrift stores and vintage.
